The History Museum of Mobile invites guests to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day with a free special lecture on Monday, October 12th at 12 PM featuring Dr. Deidra Dees, Professor of Native American Studies at the University of South Alabama. The title of her presentation is How Did We Get Indigenous Peoples’ Day?

“A Poet with Savage Authenticity,” said KINSMAN QUARTERLY who announced political poet, Dr. Deidra Suwanee Dees, as a winner of the Native Voices Award. Mvskoke and Scottish descent, Dr. Dees is a Harvard graduate who worked at the Poarch Creek Indians in Atmore, Alabama for fifteen years. She teaches Native American Studies at the University of South Alabama. Recipient of the distinguished Mitchell-McPherson Lecturer in Southern History by Troy University, Dr. Dees was the first Native American to receive this award. Her new book Indian Ice addresses ice-cold colonial resistance and cultural identity.
